Carnivorous Plants

Picture
Maryland native, Purple Pitcher Plant.
Medium: Graphite and watercolor

Interest image for upcoming workshop on drawing carnivorous plants August 2018 at the US Botanic Gardens in Washington DC.

These plants can be found in wet, boggy environments all along the Eastern US seaboard.  They lure their prey to capture into the pitcher at the base of the flower stalk.  Prey fall into the pitcher and drown in the rainwater that collects in the base of each leaf.Their prey includes flies, moths, spiders and mosquitos.  Certain bacteria present in the pitcher water breaks down and mineralizes the prey making the nutrients available to the plant.

Native American peoples regarded this plant as medicinal and made a root infusion for treating Small Pox.

Moths and Their Host Plants Triptych

Picture
This work began three years ago as I sat on my front porch watching my cat watch hummingbird moths drinking from our garden Four O'Clocks in the evening.  Inspired by this secret pollinators, I embarked on creating a series of three works: Luna Moths and Moon Flowers, Hummingbird Moths and Four O'Clocks, and Catalpa Moths and Catalpa Trees.  I used the "triptych" arrangement that I learned about through an exhibit at the National Gallery on Dutch Master altarpieces. Each wall hanging is painted silk and measures 4 fee by 6 feet.
